Saint Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14th of February every year in countries around the world. It is considered a holiday in some countries and marks the time where we celebrate love and romance with our significant others. The day itself has many romantic connotations that actually began as a celebration of a particular Christian saint named Valentinus and has now extended to the type of celebration that we know of today.
Although Christian in origin, it is interesting to note that Cupid, the Roman God of Love is also highly noted in the celebrations that surround Valentine’s Day. In addition, Cupid is often depicted as a cherub which is visualized as a very young angel armed with a bow and arrow to strike someone with the feeling of love and attraction towards another.
What is Valentine’s Day?
Interestingly enough, there are several saints who have the name Valentinus, so no one is really sure which is being celebrated as the one who is most associated with love. However, one account is that of Saint Valentine of Rome who was put in prison for performing weddings for soldiers who were otherwise forbidden to get married. His ministering to Christians at a time when they were being persecuted by Romans along with the legend that he actually healed the daughter of his own jailer augmented his legendary status. Before he was executed, he supposedly signed a letter with “Your Valentine” as a farewell to the world.
While February 14th is celebrated in the Anglican Communion as a day of feasting, the Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Valentine’s Day as well, although it is on July 6th or the 30th of the month to honor a Roman presbyter named Saint Valentine. In Brazil, the day is celebrated on June 12th.
The involvement with romance did not begin until centuries later in the Middle Ages with Geoffrey Chaucer who helped expand upon the themes of love which only flourished by the 18th century when lovers began presenting flowers to each other on that day. In addition to flowers, keys were also exchanged to “unlock the giver’s heart” which was also given to children as well to help ward off the malady of Saint Valentine as well. There are many symbols to the day which are made up of flower, doves, hearts and the winged Cupid. Only in the 19th century with the augmentation of mass produced greeting cards did writing “valentines” to one another become popular.
